　　"Wealth-which is power!How blind i was!"said the man."Now,at last,life will be worth the living.I will spend.squander.These mockers and despisers will crawl in the dirt before me,and i will feed my hungry heart with their envy,I will have all luxuries,all joys,all enchant-times of the spirit I will buy,buy,buy!I have lost much time,and chosen badly heretofore,but let that pass;I was ignorant then,and could but take for best what seemed so."

　　Three short years went by,and a day came when the man sat shivering in a mean garret;and he was gaunt and wan and hollow-eyed,and clothed in rags;and he was gnawing a dry crust and mumbling:"Curse all the world's gifts for mockeries and gilded lies!And miscalled,every one,They are not gifts,but merely lendings.Pleasure.Love,Fame.Riches:they are but temporary disguises for lasting realities-Pain,Grief,Shame,Poverty.The fairy said true;in all her store there was but one gift which was precious,only one that was not valueless,How poor and cheap and mean i know those others now to be,Bring it!I am weary.I would rest."

　　＂财富－－财富就是力量！我过去多盲目啊！＂他说．＂现在，终于，我的生命将要变得有意义．我要纵情欢度此生，我要挥霍我的人生．那些对我冷嘲热讽，轻蔑诋毁我的人将要在我面前的泥土里挣扎，而我空乏的心也将因为他们的妒忌而得到满足．我将要享尽荣华富贵，所有欢乐和所有销魂的时光．我要买，买！以前我做错了选择，失去了许多时间，就让它过去吧；当时我很无知，我只能选我觉得最好的东西．

　　短短的三年又过去了．到了这么一天，这个人蜷缩在一个简陋的小阁楼里，古瘦如柴，苍白无力，双眼深陷，身上裹着碎布衣衫，浑身颤抖不停．他一边啃着一块干面包皮，一边咕哝着：＂该死的礼物，都是为了让我受人嘲笑和欺诈！每一样都叫错了！它们都不是礼物，根本只是租借品！快乐，爱情，名声还有财富－都只不过是长久现实的暂时伪装－它们其实是永远的痛苦，悲哀，耻辱和贫穷！那个仙女说的没错啊，她所有的东西里只有一样是珍贵的，只有那么一样不是毫无价值的．我现在才明白，其它礼物是多么低贱与卑劣！把它带来吧－那真正宝贵的礼物！我累了，我想休息了．

　　The fairy came,bringing again four of the gifts,but Death was wanting.She said:"I gave it to a mother's pet, a little child.It was ignorant,but trusted me,asking me to choose for it.You did not ask me to choose."

　　“Everything happens for the best,” my mother said whenever I faced disappointment．“If you carry on，one day something good will happen．And you’ll realize that it wouldn’t have happened if not for that previous disappointment.”

　　Mother was right，as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932，I had decided to try for a job in radio，then work my way up to sports announcer．I hitchhiked to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station——and got turned down every time．In one studio，a kind lady told me that big stations couldn’t risk hiring an inexperienced person．“Go out in the sticks and find a small station that’ll give you a chance,” she said．I thumbed home to Dixon，Illinois．

　　While there were no radio－ announcing jobs in Dixon，my father said Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department．Since Dixon was where I had played high school football，I applied．The job sounded just right for me．But I wasn’t hired．My disappointment must have shown．“Everything happens for the best.” Mom reminded me．Dad offered me the car to hunt job．I tried WOC Radio in Davenport，Iowa．The program director，a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur told me they had already hired an announcer．

　　As I left his office，my frustration（挫折）boiled over．I asked aloud, “How can a fellow get to be a sports announcer if he can’t get a job in a radio station.” I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, “What was you said about sports？Do you know anything about football?” Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me broadcast an imaginary game．The preceding（在前的）autumn，my team had won a game in the last 20 seconds with a 65－yard run． I did a 15－minute build－up to that play，and Peter told me I would be broadcasting Saturday’s game！On my way home，as I have many times since，I thought of my mother’s words：“If you carry on，one day something good will happen．Something wouldn’t have happened if not for that previous disappointment.”

　　I often wonder what direction my life might have taken if I’d not gotten the job at Montgomery Ward．

1、最不可取的阅读方法。根据我的经验，我发现许多考生在阅读中多存在以下的不良习惯，这里特别指出，希望能够引起考生的注意，并加以避免改正。
　　（1）“指读”，即为了“集中注意力”，用手指或笔尖指着文章逐词阅读。一遇到生词，便停顿下来，无法在通篇理解的基础上继续进行阅读。
　　（2）“唇读”，即有的学生在阅读中喜欢读出声来，或即使不出声，嘴唇在动，或脑子里也在想着读音，无形当中影响了大脑的思维速度。
　　（3）“回读”，即在阅读中遇到生词或不熟悉的短语时，返回句首甚至段首重读；还有相当多的学生对阅读已经产生心理定势，即认为自已第一遍肯定读不懂，因此反复多遍，浪费很多时间。
　　（4）“译读”，即在阅读过程中，不断地进行逐词逐句的翻译，通过译成母语来辅助理解。由于没有掌握正确的阅读方法，习惯于在不加限定的时间内，对一小块文章精雕细琢，导致了逐词阅读接受信息的习惯。

　　2、在阅读速度方面，要以较快的速度从大量材料中捕捉有关信息，学生必须养成良好的将遇良才习惯，不是逐词阅读，而是按意群（meaningful group）扫视、连贯阅读；是拘泥于个别词句的理解，而力求融会贯通、掌握通篇的中心思想；不是通过翻译来理解，而是使英语的文字在大脑里直接产生意义。只有这样，阅读速度才能加快，理解的准确率才会提高。

　　3、在阅读理解方法方面，应看准确题干，根据不同的目的，采用不同的方法一般说来，有快读、查读和细读三种。
　　（1）快读（Skimmming）。快读的目的是用浏览全言语的方法了解文章的大意和主题思想，并对文章的结构有个总的概念，快读时，应特别注意文章的开始段、结束段、文章中每段的段首句和结尾句以及篇章连接手段和行文中的信息词（signal word）,因为它们往往是对文章内容的最精简概括，是左右文章大意的关键。
　　（2）细读（Reading for full understanding）。找到文章中的有关范围以后，即在引范围内逐句阅读，特别对关键词、句要仔细琢磨，以便对其有较深刻、较准确的理解和掌握。不仅要理解其字面意思，而且要通过推理、判断、弄清文章中“字里行间”潜在意思。在细读时，对没有学过的生词，可根据上下文或自己的背景知识等来推测其意义；对难以看懂的长句，可借助语法手段，对其加以分析，以达到透彻理解。

　　4、打下坚实的语言功底。当学生普遍了解了阅读方法与技巧后，都感到有了长足的进步，但再往后就感到提高不是太大，这主要是因为头脑长足的进步，但再往后就感到提高不是太大，这主要是因为头脑中的积累不够，因此在平进的学习过程中应把握以下两个方面：
　　（1）掌握大纲要求的词汇量，新四级大纲要求基础阶段的大学生应掌握4200个中和短语；熟练掌握英语的语法及惯用法，在平进学习中注意对所学的语法知识加以归纳总结，达到熟练运用。
　　（2）进行有计划、有目的、大量的阅读实践，只有在大量的阅读中，才能建立语感，掌握正确的阅读方法，提高阅读技能。但应注意的是这种阅读不是盲目的，而是有计划、有目的的，平时将遇良才时，把精读和泛读的内容区分开，定期进行阅读效果总结。同时，还应有意识地扩大阅读面，看一些有关英、美等国的社会文化背景的材料和科普读物，这对于提高理解能力是大有裨益的。
